Character counter for social media posts

Paste or write a post and see how long it is on every network at once, against each one’s limit. Links, emoji and hashtags are counted the way each network counts them, which isn’t always one per character. Free, with no sign-up.

Length on each network

  • Instagram0 / 2,200
  • Facebook0 / 63,206
  • LinkedIn0 / 3,000
  • X0 / 280
  • Threads0 / 500
  • TikTok0 / 2,200
  • YouTube0 / 5,000 bytes

Counted in your browser as each network counts: X weighs links and many emoji, Threads counts emoji in bytes, and YouTube limits descriptions in bytes. Nothing you type is saved or sent.

Three ways to fit every network

  • Lead with the point

Feeds cut long posts off after a line or two, so the first sentence has to work on its own on every network.

  • Write the long version once

Draft for LinkedIn or Facebook, then cut it down for X and Threads rather than stretching a short post.

  • Count your links on X

Every link costs 23 characters on X however short it looks, so a long post with two links fills up fast.

In Smartplannr each network gets its own version of a post, checked against its limit as you type. See the scheduler.

Questions

X counts every link as 23 characters, however long it is, and counts many emoji and some other characters as two.

Threads counts an emoji as the bytes it takes up, which for most emoji is four. A post full of emoji can be under 500 characters and still too long.

Five, counting the caption and the comments together. The counter shows how many you’ve used.

No. The counting happens in your browser, and nothing is saved or sent to us.
